How to Plow and Till a New Vegetable Garden

Have you always wanted to grow your own garden, but didn't know where to start? If so, this video is for you! From John Deere's Tips Notebook, in this video you'll learn how to plow and till your own new garden, from scratch. Equipment used in this video is a John Deere 3038E tractor, equipped with a 300E loader, 61-inch materials bucket, and a Frontier PB1001 one-bottom plow, as well as a Frontier RT1165 rotary tiller. You can also use a Kubota tractor with similar implements for this project. Our M&R Multi-Tool Kubota tractor package, with a plow added, would be perfect to get you started!

Some Quick Tips for This Project:

  • Start off by marking off the idea area you want to cultivate for your garden. Make sure your area has good sun exposure, drainage, and access to water (all essentials for plants to thrive). In this video, they measured an area about 30-feet x 50 feet
  • To begin plowing your garden, make your first furrow down the middle of your marked off area from end to end.
  • Always turn right, keeping your right rear tire in the furrow you just created. Your plow will throw soil into the furrow to the right of your tractor and your garden will continually enlarge with each pass.
  • After you've plowed your new garden area, let the soil dry out and settle before you do anything else.
  • After letting your soil settle for a day or two, you'll need to use your tiller to go over your plowed area. Plan on going over your area two or three times to get the soil and seedbed perfect!
  • Once you're finished tilling your garden, you're ready to begin planting your crop and watch it grow!
